Ground Source Heat Pumps

Beneath the surface the ground maintains a relatively constant temperature all year round, even in winter. A ground source heat pump can extract this heat, by circulating a water/antifreeze mix through pipes buried in the ground, and then transfer it to heat water for domestic or space heating use.

Ground Source Heat Collection Methods include:

Borehole, Closed Loop, where the heat transfer fluid is circulated through pipes set in a borehole, up to 100m deep.

Horizontal, Closed Loop, where the collection pipes are laid horizontally some 1.5m to 2m below the surface.

Ground source heat pumps benefits

Heat pumps have been in regular use for many years; over half a million units are operating worldwide and tens of thousands now being installed each year as customers recognise the many benefits including:

Ground source heat grants available

Grants are currently available through the low carbon buildings programmes (of up to £900 for Domestic customers and 50% for community based and “not for profit” organisations)

Ground source heat pump thermal stores

Along with your ground source heat pump we would normally expect to supply a thermal store.

A thermal store is a large capacity cylinder which can act as a reservoir for heat from a number of sources (solar thermal systems, conventional boilers, heat pumps etc) and as a supply for Domestic hot water and for heating systems. The store includes a range of input/ output connections allowing the integration of a number of systems in a simple and effective manner.

You can fill in our Heat Pump survey form online and we will send you a personalized estimated cost
