SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEMS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: It is not very sunny today, will my system still work?A: Although they work best in direct sunlight, very good performance will be given in the indirect light (or diffuse radiation) of a cloudy day.
Q: Will the system work at night?
A: No, the system works in daylight. During winter the reduction in daylight hours will show a similar reduction in solar gain and that is why your solar hot water system is linked into your existing hot water system.
Q: What is the heat transfer agent?
A: A heat transfer agent, commonly called Glycol, has to be used to prevent the pipe freezing in very cold weather. It is a food grade antifreeze, but unlike normal antifreeze it is classified in Europe and the USA as “edible” and is safe for use in food. The Glycol is contained within a well engineered sealed system.
Q: How much carbon dioxide does my system save?
A: We estimate that the average system will save approx. one tonne of carbon dioxide every year which is equivalent to about a large sack of soot each year. Over the life of the system it will save several tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Q: Will the system still work in very cold weather?
A: Yes, the system will work in much colder temperatures than we experience in this country as the system works on diffused radiation not outside temperature.
Q: What servicing does the system need?
A: Very little. Every month it is worth checking visually to see that nothing is wrong. Every three years the integrity of the glycol can be checked and tested.
