A SAVINGS GRACE
Chris Huhne, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, visited the Solarwall Energy Centre last month (June) in his first visit to the North since he was appointed.
After attending the Cabinet meeting in Bradford, he went on to visit a local property, to see first-hand the work of Solarwall’s insulation team and then onto the newly opened Energy Centre, based at Clifton, York.
The resource centre, developed by the Yorkshire-based renewable energy specialist, has been designed to educate and promote the economic and environmental benefits of renewable technologies to homeowners, businesses, and local authorities.
Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, said: “Energy saving has long been ignored, but is vital for tackling climate change, for our energy security, and for green growth.
“I wanted to visit York to see how businesses such as Solarwall are bringing the latest technology in energy efficiency to consumers and local authorities.
“A quarter of all carbon emissions in the UK come from our residential properties. Most of the homes we'll be using in 2050 have already been built, which is why retrofitting to make them more energy efficient is so important in saving energy and saving money. The Green Deal will enable homeowners to make changes without any upfront costs, paying back only as much as you are saving on your energy bills.
“Without doubt the cheapest way of closing the gap between energy supply and energy demand is by increasing energy efficiency and saving energy.”
Solarwall opened its doors to the Energy Centre, last month which is the only one of its kind serving the Yorkshire region. The launch taps into the current rapid expansion of the renewable energy market, fuelled further by the introduction of Feed In Tariffs (FIT) in April 2010 and the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) coming in April 2011.
Its aim is to encourage people to think about home energy management and show how, by installing simple energy saving devices, home owners can save money, as well as protect the environment. A one-stop-shop for home energy systems, the showroom will showcase products such as ground and air source heat pumps, energy saving lighting, power savers, solar thermal systems and solar photovoltaics. Advisory and technical staff will be available on site, and a customer advice telephone line will also operate.
Grant Henderson, Head of Renewables at Solarwall comments: “We were delighted to welcome Chris Huhne to the Energy Centre yesterday and show him the technology we are providing to homes and businesses across the region. The Energy Centre is the first point of contact for anyone interested in improving the way in which they use energy, in reducing their energy bills, or in reducing their impact on our environment. Greener living and clean energy are high on the political agenda as evidenced by the recent introduction of feed-in tariffs for domestic renewable electricity and the Renewable Heat incentive planned for April 2011, both of which provide significant financial incentives to people installing non-fossil fuel systems.”.
